At the end of the hottest July on record one might have expected the exhibitors at the annual Warmington Village Garden and Craft Show to have struggled to find any flowers or vegetables that would find favour with the Judges.Walking into the village hall everyone was surprised at the displays of perfect blooms, faultless fruit and vegetables. There was universal admiration for the skills of the village's gardeners who have had to cope with some very difficult growing conditions.A measure of their skills were the entries for class 60, the box of vegetables. To have grown such a variety of good looking vegetables during a time when so many plants have been suffering in the heat is a credit to local skill and ingenuity. The crafts and cookery entries were equally impressive and well up to the high standards to which we have become accustom. The only disappointment of the day was the very small number of entries for the children's fancy dress competition. One winner that must not go with being mentioned was the special award for the fastest weeder in Warmington. Having little time to keep his allotment up to its usual high standards, Graham Yeatman managed to clear the jungle of weeds and get his plot in shape for the allotment competition in record time. Unfortunately for Graham, Annette Solt's dedication and green fingers ensured she took the prize with the best kept allotment.29 July 2006 |
