Miss Davey reported that she had spoken to a lot of people about
the meeting, but felt that some people were probably happy to attend a
less formal gathering or become involved after the club is actually
set up. She felt that once a fortnight was not a huge commitment and
that people would attend. It was pointed out that a rehearsal at
school and homework could have prevented people attending this
evening. Mr Bail, however, felt that the youth attendance at the
meeting was very good.
Mr Davey expressed his view that a strategy needs to be put into
place right across the village to involve the youth. The Youth Club
should not stand in isolation, but rather be part of a whole range of
activities. The Youth Orchestra began with a small number of people
and has grown as more people are aware of its existence.
Discussion ensured on how to attract interest in the group and
possible venues. It was agreed that an informal evening for further
discussion would be beneficial. Mr Bail suggested that ideally this
should take place next week. It was agreed to meet on Tuesday 2nd
July at 7.30pm in the Village Hall. Miss Davey agreed to produce some
leaflets and posters. The School was discussed as a future venue, but
while it was agreed that here the facilities outside could be used as
well, it was felt that many people may wish to get away from the idea
of school. It was agreed that the Parish Council step back from the
arrangements and allow the group to organize itself. There is £50
remaining from the previous Youth Club and the Parish Council may be
able to fund some small expenditure.
Mr Banbridge expressed his view that many Youth Clubs fail. He
considers that it is necessary to identify activities e.g. Orchestra
and Drama and work from there. Mr Enfield disagreed however, feeling
that the youth should be given the facilities e.g. a venue, a soft
drinks bar and perhaps some music and they can then look to the
future. It was agreed that many wanted a more general club and
somewhere they could meet with their friends after school and
homework.
The Leisure Field was discussed and many felt that the current
goalposts were too big for their needs. Eventually smaller goalposts
can be looked into. It appeared that many would like games of sport
e.g. football to be organized rather than them just playing of their
own accord. Mr Rowell pointed out that the Leisure Field is being run
on a shoestring at present and a lot still needs to be done.
The age range to target was discussed and it was agreed that this
should be somewhere in the region of 9 to16. There should be
flexibility at the top end as some of the older ones might like to
take more responsibility for the younger ones.
