Monday Club (was the Tuesday Club)Back to the Clubs and Society Page HistoryThe Monday Club was started in 1987 by the benefice minister at that time Canon Michael Covington. As Warmington village was one parish within a united benefice of four it did not hold a mid morning Sunday church service every week and so it was not easy to hold a Sunday School each week either. It was decided to have a "Sunday School" type of children's group on a Monday evening during normal school term time. The Club was originally run in the church and later moved to the village hall. It operates from 17.15pm until 18.15pm and the original organisers were Canon Covington, Miss Janet Lewin, Mrs Dorothy Hinton and Mrs Jane Burke. Mrs Pat Turnbull joined later .The current leaders are Rev Brian Rogers, Miss Janet Lewin, Mrs Dorothy Hinton, Mrs Ruth Rowell and myself. For the current term only (Winter 2000) we have two Guides working for their community service badges, Miss Olivia Carpenter and Miss Katherine Davey.PurposeTo introduce children of the village to the bible in an easy to understand and light hearted way.ActivitiesCurrently we start with a Bible reading and prayers led by the vicar. We then divide into two groups (ages 4 - 6 years and 7 - 9 years) and usually use the Scripture Union SALT publication as the basis for craft, game playing or drawing activities based on the Bible reading. For the last 15 minutes we all join together as a complete group and play games. The children in the club always help to decorate the church Christmas tree and provide a few decorations for the other major church festivals. We have a pin board in the church where we display recent craft and drawing work completed by the children.Legal EnvironmentThe Child Protection Act came into force during 1998 and we had to comply with its requirements in 1999. The principal requirements were that all helpers had to be registered with the Diocese and each had to supply a reference as to their character. We also had to ensure that the parents, or a responsible adult, accompanied the children to and from the hall and a register had to be kept of the children who attended.Sheila Lacey |
