Warmington Leisure Club

Back to the Clubs and Society Page

As soon as the new Village Hall was built in 1974, Mr Roberts was keen to see it used. Almost immediately the Leisure Club was formed; and he, together with Mrs Wootten, Mrs Simpson, Mrs Kimbell and others began our twice monthly meetings.
Mr Sam Todd was the first Treasurer, followed by his wife Madge, followed by Miss Philpot; and now Elizabeth Dakteris. Our funds are very healthy, and our members are very generous.  After Mrs Kimbell gave up her job as Secretary in 1981, it was taken on by Mrs Dot Sullivan until 1991. Since then Mrs Paula Bosworth has been Secretary and 'General Dogsbody', giving up her job recently after a bad fall.
We have been privileged to have had some very interesting and varied speakers, who gave freely of their time. Some I will mention:
  • Canon Higham, who talked on Peterborough Cathedral
  • Rev. Bond, who showed wonderful slides of castles, gardens etc
  • Mrs Bond, who gave an interesting cookery demonstration - and we each received a generous sample of her work to take home
  • Mr Reg Sutton MBE, who showed slides on Canada, interesting Oundle Buildings, and his visit to Buckingham Palace
  • Mrs Tuffs, who showed us slides on butterflies and moths
  • Mrs Enfield, who, with the aid of slides, shared her holiday experiences in far away places
  • Mr Robert Bosworth (also our auditor), who gave us facts about our village history
  • Mr Barry Jackson, with Hilary and Jessie Richmond, who delighted us with singing and poems
  • Mr and Mrs Stevens showed us slides, 'searching the world for orchids'. We were later invited to their home at Ketton, where we toured all the greenhouses full of orchids, and enjoyed the hospitality of their home.
Each year we have been entertained at Mrs Simpson's for a garden party (indoors when cold or wet). Towards Christmas, the children from the Village School entertain us with their special carols. We have been encouraged to keep fit by Mrs O'Dell with armchair yoga.
We now have fewer members; but we are a friendly company, ready to welcome any who would like to join us. Our membership is £0.50, and we pay £0.40 each meeting which covers the raffle, and the tea and biscuits. Members usually donate prizes, which are acceptable but inexpensive.
Our meetings have, in the past, alternated with a speaker at one, and cards, dominoes scrabble etc at the other. Most years we have two outings, visiting such places as York, Warwick Castle, Hunstanton, Wisbech Rose Fair, Spalding Flower Festival, Springfield Gardens and Bay Tree Nurseries.
We hope to carry on for years to come, so if anyone would like to join, either as a member or helper, we would be delighted.

Mrs E Dakteris
