News in Brief

Wine Tasting

Sixty tasters enjoyed a nicely lubricated evening courtesy of the 'Wine Smith' of Nassington, so much so that they hardly noticed the snow falling on the way home afterwards.

Royal British Legion

The Poppy Appeal raised £639, with additional support from the 40s night at the Warmington Club, Mrs Kit Clamping's Coffee Morning and the Red Lion which provided food and drinks after the service on the 11th.

Bell Ringing

A peal of Warmington Treble Place Minor was rung by a team of visiting Guild members on Wednesday 25 July 2001. It was rung in memory of Guild member, John M Roffe, who gave much of his time to Warmington Church tower, bell maintenance and helping to teach new ringers.

PCC Bingo Evening

Held on 27 October, the bingo evening was the most successful yet with £582 raised for church funds.

Children's Page

Using holly, ivy and mistletoe to decorate homes at Christmas is an ancient tradition. The green leaves are a symbol of the continuing flow of life through winter.

Warmington Playgroup News

In the second half of this term the children have enjoyed autumn activities such as crunchy leaf walks around the village, and making poppy pictures. We have been overwhelmed by the support for our recent fund-raising activities: the "Witches and Wizards Fair" was packed with about 100 children plus parents, and raised almost £300, plus our cake stall at the village bonfire raised £118 in sales and donations.
This money will be used to paint designs on the Playgroup playground at the front of Warmington School. We would like to thank the many people who responded to our notice in the Post Office and saved "Teenie Tots" tokens from the Evening Telegraph - we are still waiting to find out if we have won any play equipment.

Riverside Ramblings

Can anyone think up a catchy slogan that would help to re-launch the countryside? If you can, send it to Jeremy Martineau, Arthur Rank Centre, Stoneleigh, (or I'll pass it on). It might appear alongside a famous face on posters - or even as a TV jingle - countrywide!
A vast amount of energy and brain power is rightly being devoted to rural affairs nowadays. The triple tragedies of BSE, CJD and FMD have devastated so many lives and livelihoods. Something must be done.
Organisations like the CLA, CPRE, FSA, NFU the WI, the Churches - and many others - are beavering away to devise ways that will restore confidence in our food and farming that (a) will prevent such tragedies happening again: (b) gives producers a fair return: (c) provides health food and best animal welfare: (d) discourages waste: (e) encourages all of us to buy wisely and live healthily, and (f) conserves our land, soil and countryside. Huge challenges lie ahead.

Spring Into 2002

Last Spring, may villagers noticed Warmington Parish Council's attempt to brighten up the village by planting daffodils at the ends of Big Green and Hautboy Lane. This year we've planted a greater number of bulbs (some 50 kilos or so), at the ends of the village at Stamford Lane and Broadgate Way.
Chris Ellard and I prepared the way by wielding a motorised turf cutter one Friday afternoon recently, followed by Andrew Buchanan and Graham Yeatman who joined us on the following day in a fervid planting of snowdrops, crocus and, of course, more daffodils.
Several local villagers looked a bit askance at us as we wielded shovels, and tossed earth to the right and left but, hopefully, when we get a good show in Spring 2002 their fears will be allayed. It's all part of the Parish Council's attempt to make Warmington a blooming good place to live!

Mike Dixon, Parish Councillor
