Northamptonshire's Unsung Heroes

On the 10 April 2001 Mike Dixon and John Darters went to the Unsung Heroes evening, held at the Police Headquarters in Northampton. This is the first year this event has been organised, and it proved to be a great success.

All interested parties had been asked to nominate a person, or persons, whom they consider to be an Unsung Hero for carrying out voluntary work to the benefit of the local community that had not been publicly recognised. The Police Authorities gave £500 to the most worthy nominee.

Everyone, including John Darters, whose name had been put forward, received warm thanks from the Chairman of the Police Authority, and a personal plaque in recognition.

The winners included a small group of young people from Corby centre who this year alone had acted to minimise three large fires, saved a passer-by who had collapsed and helped reduce crime in the central area by 50%

Farming Diary

...Although the cases of foot and mouth are reducing, the problem is still with us and will be for some time yet. It is really surprising how much has been affected by the movement controls.

You hire your neighbour a bull, and when he has finished his duties you want him back to serve your cows, but the regulations will not allow movement from farm to farm. Farmers at this time of year go to cattle breeding areas to buy their stores for grazing, a practice to be avoided in the present circumstances. Sheep shearing gangs go from farm to farm, again something to be avoided, but there is now insufficient labour left on farms to do this task.

Where do we go from here? Things have got to get better or I can see many more farmers following my example and retiring early.

Church News from the Benefice

Dear Friends

Do you ever watch "Who wants to be a millionaire?" I guess most of us fancy our chances but don't actually have the nerve to put ourselves to the test. Like many quiz programmes the questions range far and wide. It is not infrequent that questions on the bible or the church are put to the constants. They often prove to be the downfall of competitors and on one notable occasion led to a couple going home without a penny.

To me it seems there is a dearth of knowledge about anything to do with religion, including the Christian faith is represented in nearly every community in the country.

I am expected to know the answers to these sorts of questions although cars can get caught out at times! But it makes me think about these letters I write if it is all gobbledygook to many readers. Do I use terms and assume understanding of things so familiar to me that are perhaps are alien to you?

This is especially challenging when we look to the month of June this year. We will be celebrating the feast of Pentecost. So what is Pentecost? Pentecost is the Greek term for a Jewish celebration called the Fest of Weeks; so called because it came 50 days (pente) after the ceremony of the barely sheaf during Passover observances.

Passover is the occasion when Jews recall their time in captivity in Egypt and the angel of death Passed Over (Passover) homes that had been marked with blood. Pentecost was the beginning of the offering of the first fruits to God...
