The Tower, West Door and Bells

Warmington Church Tower
The square tower at the west end of the Nave has three levels topped by an octagonal broached spire of ashlar with gabled spire lights.

It is believed the tower was constructed in two stages, the first and second levels around 1230 and the bell chamber and spire towards the end of the 13th century.

The west door is the most highly decorated entrance to the church. It comprises an arch of four moulded orders that include a trefoiled head, dog-tooth ornamentation and fleur-de-lis decoration.

On the northern side of the door is a head stop carved with the image of a man, on the south is an image of a woman.

The bell-chamber contains a peal of six bells. The treble was cast by Mears and Stainbank and installed in 1912 in memory of William Earl of Carysfort who restored the church in 1875/76. The second bell is inscribed 'GOD SAVE THE KING 1670' and was cast by Thomas Norris.

The third bell, originaly 1669 and cast by Thomas Norris, was recast by Mears and Stainbank in 1876. The fourth bell, cast by Thomas Norris in Stamford, is inscribed 'NVNC IACOBVS EGO CANO VOBIS ORE IOCVNDO (Now I James sing to you with a cheerful voice) GOD SAVE HIS CHVRC MILLES ORMES 1604 C. N.'.

The fifth bell was cast by Henry Penn the famous Peterborough bell-founder in 1710. It includes the names of the two church wardens at the time; Will Drake and Tho Henson. The sixth bell, the tenor, was originally cast in 1710 by Henry Penn and recast in 1876 by Mears and Stainbank. The bells were extensively restored in 1999 as part of the village millennium celebrations and rededicated by Rev Canon Michael Mc Adam.
